I have a circulatory issue in my leg and developed corns directly across from one another on the SIDE of TWO toes. I have the pads on 24 hours at this point and I'm going to take your advice and remove them. I do wonder what caused me to suddenly start developing these corns. It was after both a nerve and circulation problem developed in that leg.

Hi Doctor Dave, I will be in surgery tomorrow @ 7 am. My gastoroligist will be doing laporoscopy on my hiatus hernia. I have Gerd really bad - and was diagnosed with Barretts esophagus. From what I'm hearing, laporoscopy doesn't really help much & people we're saying I'd end up doing the procedure again within a few years. I truly hope not... ZZZ tired. Take care. Kim

Wool % changes with the type of sock for both brands. A thin running sock will have the lowest %, while a thick hiking sock will have a higher %. This is why the thicker Smartwool sock had a higher %.

Hi, Dr. Dave. I watched all your videos about your hernia journey. I hope you are better now! Unfortunately, as you alluded to in your videos, there are complications. It is best to see a hernia specialist a) when choosing to have hernia surgery and b) when any questions or complications. Best of luck!

My first hernia was in 2014. Got it repaired with mesh. Mesh gave me cancer. Had it removed, went into remission holistically. 2024 other side (inguinal) had hernia. Had it repaired two months ago with just stitches. Hernia recurred. Now, I'm between a rock and a hard place--have pain of hernia and can't do a whole lot physically, and possibly at some point needing an emergency repair, or get possible cancer again.

So what do we do when it burns the skin??

I'm 46 and a little over 3 years since bilateral open inguinal repair w/ mesh. My surgeon only does hernia repairs and gastric bypass surgeries which I understand are commonly specialties that go together. He is fairly well known and recommended open vs. laparoscopic and used the mesh that is sort of shaped like an hourglass (Prolene or Ultra-Pro maybe?) and is inserted below the hole and above which sounded like it would hold against forces internally and from movement (imagine wrapping your index finger around the narrow part of an hour glass) I LOVE lifting weights, so I really wanted to do it right and follow the instructions perfectly. He also recommended getting one side done and then the other a month later. I figured that was a money thing (being able to bill for two separate everything), but he said that it was a better bet for success and he said the same for the mesh vs. lapro. I had both surgeries and didn't lift a thing for 6 weeks. I started back with VERY light weights after 8 weeks. and then added a few pounds here and there every so often. After about a year, I was back to my normal routine in the home gym. After about 2 years, some of my lifts surpassed pre-surgery. 3 years later and I slowly am increasing my lifts. I mostly do compound lifts like deadlift, squats, overhead press, bench press etc. The only issue (and why I am in this rabbit hole) is that sometimes when I do something else unrelated that causes twisting or unilateral movements, one or both of my "areas" hurt. This last time was bowling. I was chucking 10lb balls with wild abandon. The next day, I felt the pain again. I start wondering and consulting Dr. Google and thinking "what if this is it?" Eventually (knock on wood) the pain typically goes away and I get back to usual activities and forget about it completely. I hope and pray that this is the case currently.

Im only one month into my open inguinal hernia repair. I agree. Got the incision healing ridge which as you say, feels like pvc pipe and associated with not bad pain but rather somewhat a nagging pain. However, thats probably a small price to pay as long as the mesh repair was done thoroughly and correctly and less chance of reoccurrence. Ill take this discomfort anytime of day versus mesh discomfort in abdominal wall. Try a back brace or some binder to hold everything in place for activities.

Didnt get black and blue. Also did icing.

First three days a total motherfkr getting out of bed. Holy begeezus. I used a piss jug. Best thing to have after surgery. Save you pain trips to the bathroom. Ok, 4th day before I could go to toilet and sitting down another mutherfkr. They gave me laxatives.

They used a glue to hold my incision together, no infections, no problems. Yes, area looked like a tomato with swelling. Thats fluid introducing nutrients in the area.

Totally get the phsyckie involved! I wonder too but screw it, gonna continue with life.

That finger is called a healing ridge. Still got that after 1 month. Very minumal pain.

Dont worry about the cost. I look at it like this. Ok a veteran might make say 75k a year but has the VA so medical care is free. No premiums no deductibles. Now you have a professional making 200k a year that pays around 20k a year to include his hernia surgery, so hes still way ahead of said veteran that only makes 75-100 k a year. So its all relative right?

I was told by the VA doctor that they would use a double mesh repair on my open inguinal hernia repair. Meaning one in the back and one in the front. But i wasnt awake to see if that was actually done. Had my follow up, all looking good so far. Spooky business for sure.

Intetesting. I went with open repair but my cousin that does hernia surgery was wondering why I opted for open repair. I guess he feels more comfortable doing those robotically. I had open repair inguinal surgery done at the VA Medical Center a month ago. Minimul pain only around healing ridge area of incision. And the zero price was right.

Hello. I had an open incision indirect inguinal hernia with mesh repair at the VAMC (Veterans Affairs Medical Center) about a month ago. So far, so good. The majority of current pain stems from the healing ridge area of my incision. I opted for open repair because the VA considers this to be the gold standard in hernia repair, and I'd rather if the surgeon feels more comfortable doing it that way, so be it. Can't lift 10lbs for 6 weeks. I will tell you that psychologically, I will always be worried about it and I hope this doesn't reoccur. The good news is that it won't cost me a dime. But I hope this doesn't reoccur since I do physical work. I'm 62 so if I can pound out 3 more years, I'll retire. I just never seemed to trust robotic surgery for this type of fix close to my nuts. I'm sorry you have a reoccurrence. Go open repair this time. Maybe they can stitch your mesh in place better.

Just came across your channel and wanted to ask until I find a new PCP where I live so u CAN go to a foot specialist or Podiatrist …I rode my bike for 1st time in a long time due to breaking OTHER foot being hit in a car accident. I rode about 8-10 miles NP…🤗 walked a couple of miles in thick sand etc. ALL good …NP…THEN one day it was so hot I rode with sandals on -15 miles and that night my foot swelled TWICE the size and that was May 22!!! I’ve been to ER & X-ray shows NO broken bones thank GOD but I’m wondering what in the WORLD 🌍 did this and WHY it’s not getting any better?!!! 🤔 (have to be on it and asked for a shoe/boot thingee but don’t wear it unless going out as I work from home . It’s NOT edema and somehow occurred that evening after also walking another 2 miles the following day in thick sand plus riding the bike again about 8 miles but with tennis shoes on and that foot laced open and icing and elevating it in the am and pm and as much as possible. Didn’t take any ibuprofen first week at all but only Tylenol 500 mg. Now it’s waking me up in the middle of the night & throbbing in daytime too. 😝I had to get a pain pill out of my safe from years ago at a dental appt. as Tylenol wasn’t cutting it.🥴 I DO have osteoporosis as I’m long boned and thin and my feet are long and bony 😊so I’m wondering if I DO have a heirline fracture that the x-rays possibly didn’t pick up? 😕🤔 Is that possible ? As it’s so swollen and main area of pain to touch is right on the tarsals in the center and looks bruised in the whole area! My foot looks so fat it’s wrinkled at the base of 2 toes and it’s a bluish color. So strange! Any feedback wouud be appreciated as I continue to find anecdotal reports if this has occurred to anyone else with bony feet or osteoporosis while riding long distances with improper shoes on … Or else I was in battle in space while sleeping and a big fat Reptilian stepped on it! 🤣🛸😵‍💫👽🐊🦎🦖🥴 Happy Fathers Day💕🦋💕 @frugalfoot4973

Any general surgeon doesn't doesn't cut it . A few years back, I had a hernia on my left side, which failed after 3 months , no.mesh was used, and I was recommended another surgeon who said the open surgery should have been lower down , second surgery with a mesh was successfully done, it's now been 18 years with no problems, I developed a hernia on my right side which was repaired before 10 days ago, under local anesthetic, which was weird, they placed a sheet in front of my face, I was wide awake, I could hear every thing said, " scalpel, scissors., stitches, mesh " they placed music and were singing 😅 now the pain is minimal, just must avoid heavy lifting for a month , I'm 72 and retired so no problem, as for cost Cyprus has NHS so expenses are minimal, anyway I wish you good health and a speedy recovery 😊😊🙏🙌

Wow good thing I watched this 😮‍💨 I already picked out a Doctor who specializes in hernia repair. Though I don’t have insurance so I’ll find out the bill from the hospital sometime soon before the surgery. Another reason why I didn’t enroll in health insurance is because they didn’t cover anything really, possibly just the taxes like $25.

I have a short right leg, about 1 half inch. If I use a heel lift, wont my toes point down when I stand?

Thats acary! I am due for inquinal repair hernia.. but I am told I am "high risk Blood clot" so on medication for three months before evaluated to perform operation! Seems worse pain is the gas dispersion! Sounds horrible!

And never competitively, just to work and back as a teenager and occasionally just riding through the countryside for the fun of wind in my hair etc. I cannot physically cycle now because of an arthritic knee. In your case I would be very cautious about taking up heavy cycling again. Who would want to put any unnecessary strain on the groin area after being subjected to several hernia ops? But have you thought of switching to a recumbent bicycle? I think the rider is less hunched over than on a standard bike. Bummer that recumbent bikes are banned from participating in races!

It would be interesting (and possibly useful) to get a general idea of what you eat regularly, as you have referred several times to the necessity for soft stools, and also to your diet. I eat a lot of bread! I also eat fish 3 or 4 times a week. I have an egg for breakfast every day, sometimes with bacon, sometimes in an omelette with shrimp and mushrooms. I drink a lot of tea with milk, no sugar. I don't eat enough vegetables!

6:44 Your pain scale on Day 1: 1/10. Mine, after open op, was *10/10* after the local anaesthetic wore off. It didn't get any better on Day 2. On Day 3 it reduced to 6/10. But I should have iced more. Just didn't know how effective icing is. My pain scale didn't reach 1/10 for over a week.

I think my right side inguinal hernia done 3 years ago has failed. It was open surgery using mesh. My question: Is the repair of a failed hernia op more complicated because of the old mesh that is in there? Does the surgeon leave most or all of the old mesh in place or does it all have to be removed bit by bit? I would think this could be quite a problem where the old mesh has become part of the surrounding tissue.

I am literally shocked to the core by the amount you had to pay for your inguinal hernia surgeries. Here in Britain all health care is free at the point of need. I have had both the left and the right inguinal hernia repaired since 2014. Mesh was used in both cases. Neither operation cost me a bean. One is never shown any bill, invoice, or anything. You have the op, either day case or overnight stay, and you are discharged. End of story. They just say bye bye and here's an information sheet to advise you how/when to take the meds they give you (which are also free if you're older than 60, as I was; I'm now 78). But the reason I watched your video was not the cost, but the recurrence of the hernia after repair. I have a strong suspicion that my most recent hernia repair 3 years ago on the right side has failed. For over a week I've been getting the typical burning sensation in the right lower quadrant in the area around the incision. However, the pain disappears when I lay flat on my bed or sit in a recliner. It takes about 10 minutes for the burning to subside. But if I then get up and walk around, do work in the house or garden, within 30 minutes the first sting of that burning is felt and it just gets worse and worse until I sit or lie down again. I don't feel any bulge that can be pushed back in. So what symptoms did you have to make you decide that your operation had failed?

*Tips and information for recovering from Hernia Surgery if you live alone.* These are things you should do before you leave the house to go for surgery. This includes but is not limited to: Cook and prepare a week’s worth of meals and snacks before surgery. Meals that will be easy to pass through your digestive system. Things like vegetable soup with beans, carrots, celery…, oatmeal with prunes, egg salad, chicken salad, steamed carrots, broccoli, asparagus… low fat and low grease type foods. Snacks like apples, oranges, *ripe* bananas, all kinds of fruits and berries are good to keep things moving. Start taking a stool softener one or two days before surgery and then continue taking it when you get back home. Wear loose fitting clothes to the hospital and continue to do so when you get back home. Example: I took a shower that morning with an antibacterial soap, I wore clean socks, slippers, sweatpants with no underpants, a T-Shirt, and no jewelry of any kind. In a ziplock bag place your keys, ID card, a credit card, medical insurance cards, and give it to your driver to hold. Do not take your phone to surgery. Leave your phone at home, on your nightstand, and fully charged. Place something next to your toilet you can grab onto to help you get on and off the toilet. Do the same for your bed and other areas you may sit. Have toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss out and ready to use. A glass to use for water to rinse out your mouth. You’re not going to be able to bend over to _cup water_ into your hands. If you don’t already have a _grabber,_ get one. Place a thermometer on your nightstand and make sure it is in working order. Have on hand at least two ice packs that you can wrap a clean cloth around to put over the location of surgery and rotate them from the freezer as needed. This will keep the swelling down. Read your after surgery instructions and follow them. Listen to your doctor and follow his/her orders. Keep the wound area clean and GENTALY clean it with an antibacterial soap every morning and again before you go to bed at night. Have clean sheets on your bed. The next day get up and walk but be careful. I walked outside twice around the cul-de-sac four times a day starting the day right after surgery. Twice in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then again in the evening. Have plenty of water and Gatorade on hand, and before you leave for surgery place a few bottles on your nightstand, computer desk, kitchen table, kitchen counters, your television chair, and in your refrigerator. Drink plenty of liquids. At least four bottles per day. Take pain medication as needed but don’t overdo it. All pain medications can cause constipation and trust me, you don’t want that. A list of movies you may want to watch. I am not going to sugarcoat this for you. It’s going to be hard. The first three days are not going to be pretty, they are hard and tough, so be ready. It gets easier on your fourth day. Good luck and I hope this helps.
